Monaghan Institute Students immersed in ‘Innovation’ at Kingspan’s IKON Centre

Recently, 24 enthusiastic students and three tutors from Monaghan Institute’s Architectural and Engineering programmes embarked on an insightful journey through Kingspan’s Global Innovation Centre, known as “IKON,” located in Kingscourt, Co Cavan.

Guided by hosts Jeannine and Molly, the group enjoyed a comprehensive tour, exploring the Research and Development (R&D) facility’s various facets and gaining insights into cutting-edge products and emerging technologies. The tour was divided into two groups, ensuring a thorough exploration of the facility.

A highlight of the visit was the presentation by Johnathan, unveiling the creation of a “Digital Twin” model of the building using Building Information Modeling (BIM). The demonstration showcased the remarkable accuracy and completeness of the digital representation.

The Hologram area proved to be another fascinating stop, where a variety of products and their performances were displayed in a captivating manner. However, the pinnacle of the tour was the “Future Space” on the top floor, where learners experienced a unique “VR without the headsets” concept. Through an app and iPad, students accessed the product room, virtually walking through and reviewing products—a truly immersive and futuristic encounter.

Reflecting on the day, one of the tutors remarked, “The IKON is truly a ‘Living Building,’ as described by our hosts.” The visit provided the students with an exceptional opportunity to witness firsthand the intersection of innovation and technology, right in their local community. Monaghan Institute looks forward to more collaborative experiences that enrich the education and perspective of its students.
