European Coding Week at Monaghan Institute

Students from a number of local schools recently visited the computer department at Monaghan Institute to take part in a series of computer coding talks and workshops as part of a European wide initiative.

Learning to code is increasingly seen as being important in today’s world as rapid advances in technology change the way we communicate, work, shop and think. The workshops are an attempt to help students develop their understanding and coding skills to help them cope with these new changes.

Students from Inver College, Carrickmacross and St Aidan’s Comprehensive, Cootehill had an opportunity to talk to Computer Games Level 5 and Advanced Software Innovation Design Level 6 students at Monaghan Institute and explore the many coding projects being completed in a variety of languages such as C#, Java, Javascript, CSS, Scratch, Minecraft and Unity etc. In addition, they were able to log on to the college’s Moodle Virtual Learning Environment and have fun with a number of problem solving and brain teaser computer quizzes.

The computer department at Monaghan Institute would also like to extend an invitation to schools to join us for our HOUR OF CODE event, which we will be running from Monday 4th-Friday 8th December 2017.

Also, as part of the SCIENCE FESTIVAL a family fun day is being held in Monaghan Institute on Saturday 18th November, 2017 from 12:00 -5:00pm.
