Graduates from the early years of Monaghan Institute join in celebrating 25 years
Monaghan Institute has been contacting past graduates, as part of its 25 year celebrations. Recently two graduates of the Sports Department from the early years visited the college – Ciaran and Elaine Mc Mullen.
Ciaran McMullen was in the first cohort of students enrolled at MIFET, completing the Sport and Recreation course in 1992/1993 with tutor Edel Randles (Edel is now lecturing in the Sports Department of IT Tralee). Ciaran is the Manager of the Leisure Club at the Four Seasons Hotel, Monaghan. Throughout his career since leaving college he has worked in various leisure clubs and outdoor pursuits centres and adventure camps whilst travelling in Australia, New Zealand, and America and also in Sligo.
Additional leisure industry qualifications Ciaran has completed include: pool plant operator, first aid, computers, swim instructor, spinning, water aerobics, pool lifeguard and water safety.
Ciaran has maintained an ongoing relationship with the Sports Department of Monaghan Institute, liaising regularly with Course Co-Ordinator Shane Williams regarding student work placements. Current Monaghan Institute students Lucia Okruta (Sport & Leisure Management Level 5) and Kevin Brannigan (Sports Development Level 6) both completed their work placement in the Four Seasons Leisure Club this year.
Elaine Mc Mullen completed the Sport and Recreation (I year course) in 1995 followed by a BTEC Diploma in Leisure and Tourism (2 years) in 1997. Course tutor on the BTEC Sports programme at that time was Shirley Connolly – McKenna (Shirley is now lecturing in the Sports Department of Sligo IT).
Elaine has been working at the Four Seasons Hotel and Leisure Club, Monaghan since she finished her studies. She started initially as a part time employee, when she was studying at MIFET, then went on to full time employment when she completed her course. Elaine is now the Assistant Manager of the hotel’s Leisure Club. Some of her current duties include managing the accounts and customer service, as well as teaching swimming to adults, children and babies.
Elaine has gained many additional qualifications since leaving college including: swim instructor, baby swim instructor, pool plant operator, pool life guard and Occupational First Aid. She has kept in contact with some fellow students from MIFET over the years, mainly via social media.
