LTS1 - Level 5 Strength and Conditioning for Sport

Strength and Conditioning has become a key consideration for athletes in all sports over the last decade. This programme aims to enable learners to develop a clear understanding of the science of strength training and the application of strength and conditioning techniques in sport to enhance athletic performance.

Leaving Certificate with five O6 grades (or five passes pre 2017) or Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent. For mature students applications may be considered based on a proven interest in strength and conditioning. Entry may be subject to interview and depends on satisfactory Garda Vetting.

Course Structure

The Strength and Conditioning programme will introduce learners to key areas including foundation practices in strength and conditioning. Learners will also examine methods in activation and mobilisation to assist with sport injury prevention. Additionally, the programme will look at introducing learners to exercise and fitness instruction which will focus on strength/power conditioning, speed development and studies in sports physiology.

Career Options | Progression

Successful completion of the programme will give graduates the skills necessary to work in a number of careers including working with sports groups or individuals to improve sporting performances. Strength and Conditioning professionals can gain employment with many different organisations including sports teams/clubs, health and fitness clubs and sports governing bodies.

Additionally, holders of a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Sports, Recreation & Exercise may progress to a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Sports, Recreation & Exercise at Monaghan Institute or to further studies on selected courses at Institutes of Technology/Universities.

LTS2 - Level 5 Sports Coaching & Exercise Studies

The course is practically orientated and introduces a broad range of sport and fitness modules to develop fundamental coaching skills and abilities in a variety of different sports and disciplines.

This course aims to provide learners with the practical skills and knowledge to instruct people in the sports, coaching and leisure industry. Gain a qualification to work in an industry with real rewards and change people’s lives on a daily basis.

Career Options | Progression

Sports, Recreation & Exercise Level 5 graduates may progress to a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Sports, Recreation & Exercise at Monaghan Institute or to further studies on selected courses at Institutes of Technology/Universities. Alternatively, you may gain direct access to the leisure industry at assistant level in leisure centres, swimming pools and health centres or as an assistant coach/instructor.

LTS4 - Level 5 Sport and Physical Therapy Studies

This course is aimed at learners interested in the area of sports injuries and their treatment. It prepares people to work alongside a physiotherapist, assisting with patient handling, patient care and supervised use of physiotherapy equipment.

Career Options | Progression

This course will focus on a range of sports injury related areas relevant to employment as a physiotherapy assistant. Holders of a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Sport, Recreation & Exercise may also progress to further studies at Institutes of Technology/Universities through the Higher Education Links Scheme.

LTS5 - Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Health, Fitness & Sport Performance

This Advanced Certificate course involves practical and theoretical sport studies to prepare learners for a career in sport coaching, sport injury therapy, sport development and the leisure sector. In addition it prepares students for advanced progression to further studies.

Applicants for this Advanced Certificate course must have already successfully obtained a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Sports, Recreation & Exercise or equivalent. Entry may be subject to interview/assessment and depends on satisfactory Garda Vetting. Ability to swim is preferable.

Throughout the year there will be opportunities to practise coaching skills, gain national coaching qualifications, examine nutrition, improve sporting opportunities in your local community, study health promotion and treat sports injuries, while enhancing career and further education opportunities. The On Site Massage module enables learners to perform massage on non-pathological tissue in the work place and at sporting events.
