Monaghan Institute’s Students Union gets off to a good start

The start of a new academic year at Monaghan Institute brings with it many new opportunities for students. Each course nominates a class representative to be their voice on the Student’s Union for the duration of the year.

As the principle vehicle of communication and representation between learners, teachers and the local community, the Students’ Union is involved in promoting and improving the quality of life of each learner attending Monaghan Institute. It provides a voice for students’ issues relating to college life and beyond, as well as enhancing the development of the social network within the college and possibly with organisations outside Monaghan Institute. The Student’s Union assists in providing relevant information about health, accommodation and other issues along with fund raising for charities by organising various sporting, cultural and social events.

The first of this academic years SU activities took place on Tuesday last. Entitled Spin Madness, staff and students were welcomed to don their trainers and attempt for the fastest time over 3 minutes on a spin bike conveniently located in the canteen. This event aimed to promote mental health awareness in a fun and active way.

Along with planned SU events there are many clubs and societies that exist within Monaghan Institute. All clubs and societies are decided upon and led by the students themselves. Amongst those starting this month are clubs in Photography; Ultimate Frisbee; a Music Society; a Book Club, Basketball and an LGBT society.

This range of clubs is a representation of the likes and interests of Monaghan Institute students. There is always something new and exciting happening at the college and 2017/2018 promises more of the same.
