Monaghan Institute Students Visit The Playhouse, Derry
by Matthew McCaul
Recently Monaghan Institute students were invited to visit The Playhouse, Derry to participate in their Theatre of Witness programme. Theatre of Witness is a form of performance in which “the true stories of those who have been marginalised, forgotten or hurt by society are woven into collaborative theatre productions. At The Playhouse individuals come together to share their stories and experiences from The Troubles, it gives people from both sides of the community the opportunity to come together and break down the barriers that have divided them throughout the years.
Students began the day by taking a very educational tour of the Derry walls led by our expert guides Ann and James. Despite the rain the students’ spirits were not dampened as they embraced the stunning views and vast history of Derry.
Later in the day learners were delighted to attend the workshop where they heard stories from the times of The Troubles from many perspectives. Students learned about the harsh realities of the troubles from first-hand accounts and gained a great insight into the lives of everyday people during the times of the troubles. Students also got the opportunity to ask questions to those sharing their stories, which gave great insight and depth to the stories being told.
All who attended the workshop were left inspired by the bravery and honesty of those who told their stories and with greater knowledge and insight to the times of The Troubles in Northern Ireland. Monaghan Institute would like to thank Theatre of Witness, especially Kieran Smyth, a past graduate of Monaghan Institute for such an informative and enjoyable day.
