Completing a one-year course at Monaghan Institute instilled confidence in my academic potential
Shane Cadden recently completed the QQI Level 5 Pre-University Arts/Liberal Arts programme at Monaghan Institute, after returning to education to plan for his future.
“After the breakout of the COVID pandemic, I was in a very precarious situation and not really sure what I was going to do next with my life. During the lockdown, I started studying different subjects, as a hobby more than anything and it was not long until I was considering re-entering education. But this was quite a daunting task as at this point it had been eight years since I was in any kind of academic setting. But taking the Liberal Arts course helped me to prepare for continuing my education.
It was a fun, friendly atmosphere where I was able to acquire the skills I would need going on to further third level courses. There was a great mix of subjects. I got to study modules that I was already interested in such as literature and history, and I also got to explore modules in subjects that I had no previous experience, such as the European Studies module. The class was accommodating to everyone in the group, everyone got the opportunity to discuss their own perspectives in an inclusive and respectful environment.
As I write this, I am in the process of CAO applications, and I have already received mature student offers from two courses in University College Cork. The Liberal Arts course is fantastic and is an excellent step for anyone who is considering a future in the Humanities. At the beginning of the year, I was unsure about what I was going to do next but my time at Monaghan Institute has made me feel at ease with the path going forward and confident in my academic potential.”
