Monaghan Institute’s one-year Pharmacy Counter Assistant course will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need. As well as a QQI qualification including modules in Medical Terminology, Retail Selling, Nutrition and Customer Service, learners complete the Irish Pharmacy Union’s Medicines Counter Assistant award also. The work varies from dispensing over the counter medications, helping clients choose medical aids and appliances to demonstrating and selling cosmetics, perfumes and more.

I started my education by doing the Pharmacy Counter Assistant course at Monaghan Institute. I was not sure where I wanted to go with my career but after doing the course I realised I had learned a lot of valuable skills for working in the pharmacy world. The course included Medicines Counter Assistant Award from the Irish Pharmacy Union and QQI level 5 modules in Customer Service, Nutrition and Retail Selling. These skills gave me the ability to give any patient or customer the best possible experience in a pharmacy. After the course I went to Drogheda Institute where I studied to be a Pharmacy Technician. I am currently employed full time in Black’s Pharmacy in Monaghan as their Manager & Pharmacy Technician. I would highly recommend this course to anyone!

I went to Monaghan Institute as a mature learner. I completed the Pharmacy Counter Assistant course and really enjoyed it, it was hard work but this was rewarded with great results. There was a mixture of age groups on the course, some learners attending straight from their leaving cert and other mature learners, and we all got on great together. I have been working in Blacks Pharmacy for three years now, and I really enjoy it. I have found what I studied at MI to be invaluable.
