A traineeship is a structured training programme designed to meet the specific skills needs of an industry and leads to nationally recognised qualifications.
The project is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union.
What is a Traineeship?
Traineeships combine directed off-the-job training (classroom-based learning) with on-the-job training (work-based learning), with a minimum of 30% of the programme delivered in the workplace. This blended approach enables participants to develop practical skills and gain real work experience while reinforcing the theory learned in the classroom.
Local Employers and CMETB design all aspects of the traineeship, from programme development and recruitment through to delivery, ensuring it is tailored to address identified skills gaps and workforce needs within the industry.

Am I Eligible to Apply?
Minimum age: Statutory school leaving age.
Educational requirement: Have a QQI qualification or equivalent (one level below the traineeship course).
Mature applicants: Equivalent work experience can be considered.

There are no fees for Traineeship courses. You will be entitled to Travel or Accommodation allowance, a Meal Allowance and access to the National Childcare Scheme. If you are on a Department of Social Welfare payment you may be able to continue to receive your payments, you should check with your DSP officer. For those not in receipt of a DSP payment a bursary may be payable. This is at the discretion of the employer and is subject to satisfactory conduct and attendance.

Power Your Future with the Renewable Construction Technologies Traineeship! Gain essential construction skills and the ability to install solar panels. Earn QQI Level 5 and 6 qualifications, alongside additional professional certificates, while receiving hands-on experience with Ohk Energy Group or other renewable energy specialists. Launch your career in the growing green energy sector with a traineeship that combines classroom learning at Monaghan Institute with hands-on industry experience at Ohk Energy Group.
The traineeship provides a clear progression pathway into employment, previous participants have progressed into rewarding careers with Ohk Energy Group as Apprentice Electricians, Junior Trade Assistants (Roofing and Retrofitting), and Assistant Warehouse Managers, demonstrating the programme’s strong track record of supporting learners from training into meaningful employment.
What will you study?
Participants of this programme will acquire a QQI Level 5 Major Award in Construction Technology and QQI Level 6 Award in Micro Solar Photovoltaic Systems Implementation. Student learning is underpinned and enhanced by using state of the art equipment within the course.
In addition individuals will gain practical experience installing solar panels and achieve industry certificates such as Safe Pass and Harness training.

Career Prospects
Graduates can obtain careers within Renewable Energy, Construction or Engineering Technology companies.
Including Careers in Construction Site Management / Mechanical Engineering / Solar Panel Technician / Architecture / Civil Engineering / Electrician or Machine Operator.
On successful completion of the course individuals will have the necessary qualifications, skills and experience for direct employment in the in the industry. Successful completion of the traineeship will guarantee an interview with Ohk Energy Group for apprenticeship and further career opportunities. Alternatively, individuals can progress to the next level of the National Qualifications Framework.
Degree Progression
QQI Level 5 Construction Studies graduates are eligible to apply through the CAO and/or the Higher Education Links Scheme for entry to a range of Higher Certificate and Degree programmes including:
- TU Dublin Engineering Level 8
- UL Engineering Teaching Level 8
- DkIT Mechanical Engineering Level 7
- AIT Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) Level 7
Places are not guaranteed in these Institutes and are subject to students meeting certain criteria. It is the students’ responsibility to consult with the relevant HEI for information on the admissions process and any specific entry requirements

Career Prospects
Graduates may apply for employment opportunities within host companies for roles such as CAD Technician or Architectural Design Technicians.
Graduates are eligible to apply through CAO and the Higher Education Links Scheme for entry to a range of Higher Certificate and Degree programmes including Level 8 Civil Engineering or Architecture Technology.
Graduates are eligible to apply through CAO to third level degree courses. Individuals maybe eligible for direct entry to year 2 in some universities for example Level 7 or 8 in Construction Management or Architectural Technology.

Monaghan Institute in partnership with DKIT’s School of Engineering and have established advanced entry from the QQI Level 6 Architectural Technology and Design traineeship into Year 2 of a number of Level 7 and 8 degree courses, including Architectural Technology and Building Surveying.
