What is a Traineeship?
Traineeships combine directed off-the-job training (classroom-based learning) with on-the-job training (work-based learning). A min of 30% of the course is on-the-job. This approach provides the opportunity to develop practical skills and gain real work experience, reinforcing the theory learnt in the classroom.
Employers and CMETB design all aspects of the traineeship, from programme design and development to recruitment and delivery, therefore tailoring the programme to meet the skill needs and gaps within the industry.

There are no fees for Traineeship courses. You will be entitled to Travel or Accommodation allowance, a Meal Allowance and access to the National Childcare Scheme. If you are on a Department of Social Welfare payment you may be able to continue to receive your payments, you should check with your DSP officer. For those not in receipt of a DSP payment a bursary may be payable. This is at the discretion of the employer and is subject to satisfactory conduct and attendance.

This is a full-time course for 42 weeks combining practical training at NRG and classroom-based learning in Monaghan Institute. The course is delivered in Monaghan Institute Monday – Friday from 9-4pm. Work placement will commence in October in block 2/3 weeks throughout the year. Placement times will vary.
Participants of this programme will acquire a QQI Level 5 Major Award in Construction Technology and QQI Level 6 Award in Micro Solar Photovoltaic Systems Implementation (*subject to QQI approval and completion of CMETB internal governance procedures). Career Prospects
Graduates can obtain careers within Renewable Energy, Construction or Engineering Technology companies. Including Careers in Construction Site Management / Mechanical Engineering / Solar Panel Technician / Architecture / Civil Engineering / Electrician or Machine Operator.
On successful completion of the course individuals will have the necessary qualifications, skills and experience for direct employment in the in the industry. Successful completion of the traineeship will guarantee an interview with NRG for apprenticeship and further career opportunities. Alternatively, individuals can progress to the next level of the National Qualifications Framework.
Degree Progression
QQI Level 5 Construction Studies graduates are eligible to apply through the CAO and/or the Higher Education Links Scheme for entry to a range of Higher Certificate and Degree programmes including:

This Traineeship provides a wide range of key digital marketing, ebusiness and creative web development skills necessary to work within a marketing setting. The learning environment includes access to our state of the art Apple Mac suite where trainees receive a free account with Adobe Creative Cloud, gaining access to the latest industry standard packages for content creation. Trainee’s will have the opportunity to carry out work placement with local companies throughout the course.

Is this course right for you?
The programme places an emphasis on project management skills, advertising and selling online, creating and maintaining websites, creating images, posters, animations and videos for use online, creating and managing social media platforms i.e Facebook, Twitter and using modern techniques such as analytics to understand on-line marketing campaigns.
Students have access to industry standard equipment such as; DJI Drones, DLSR cameras, podcasting suite and professional film lights.
What will you study?
Learners will gain the skills, knowledge and competencies to work autonomously and under supervision in a range of digital marketing contexts and/or to progress to further or higher education and training. All learners will receive a free Adobe Creative Cloud license and can become an Adobe Certified Associate (ACA).

CMETB in partnership with Combilift have collaborated to develop a Traineeship course to teach learners about engineering and to prepare them for work as Assembly Technicians with Combilift. Combilift plan to double their production over the next five years and have identified a need for skilled employees in helping to achieve this. The aim of this course is to combine theory with practical industry experience to deliver a solid understanding of Engineering before the trainee enters full-time employment with Combilift .

What will you study?
This course offers practical skills in fitting, auto electrics, CAD and hydraulics.This skillset forms the basis of any course in Engineering which learners might pursue at a third level institution or on an apprenticeship. Trainees will complete 12 weeks workbased learning with Combilift Ltd. and 26 weeks of classroom-based learning in Monaghan Institute. I never studied practical subjects in secondary school, and I had no real hands-on experience, but I was eager to learn

I chose this course because I knew I wasn’t ready for university, and I knew I wanted to get out of working in hospitality. I heard about this course through friends of family, and I had heard great things about CombiLift. I never studied practical subjects in secondary school, and I had no real hands-on experience, but I was eager to learn.
So far, I have really enjoyed all aspects of the course, from working hands on in the workshop to learning how to make 3D models in SolidWorks. There is much to learn from the work placements in CombiLift and it has given me the confidence that by the end of this course, I’ll be prepared to work full time out in the global headquarters. Although I would like to continue on to the apprenticeship! There is a good buzz about the factory canteen, everyone I’ve worked with has been friendly and understanding. I wasn’t overloaded with work on the placements, but I was given enough to keep me occupied and keep me learning.
The tutors here at Monaghan Institute have been friendly and helpful, Matthew Ward is our course coordinator and he’s down to earth. I’m part of the student union, helping organise events around the college, the most recent being a Christmas quiz.
This course leads to a career in original equipment manufacturing but could also branch out to all areas of engineering. I think it makes for a great start!

After I had finished my leaving cert, I was unsure what I wanted to do going forward. I found the OEM Engineering Traineeship with Combilift through a friend who was already attending and expressed brilliant things about his experience. I have a keen interest in engineering and metalwork in school, so I decided I would try it out without knowing what specific engineering principle I preferred.
Everything has been great, you get to learn about a lot of different engineering, electronic, and mechanical related subjects whilst in college, and then you get to learn and apply those ideas on your work placements within Combilift. Studying such a wide range of subjects (in Monaghan Institute) can sometimes make it challenging, however with a university like atmosphere, both the classmates and tutors are all excellent and help with any questions I have. I have developed a range of skills which will benefit me in the future, such as metalworking and welding. By the end of the course, I will have a QQI level 5 qualification in Engineering Technology as well as a Level 2 City & Guilds qualification in Hydraulics and a LSS Yellow Belt. On completion of the course I will have an opportunity to seek employment in Combilift or possibly to continue my studies with an OEM Apprenticeship at level 6.
Overall, I would say this course is suited towards people who enjoyed practical subjects such as metalwork or construction in school, are looking for an apprenticeship and want to gain employment in a variety of different fields.

What appealed to me about the OEM Engineering Traineeship was it gave me a chance to study engineering locally. It’s a mixture of theory and hands on learning in the classroom as well as 12 weeks work placements in Combilift, not to mention there are no fees and you receive your own toolbox. I’m hoping to progress to the OEM Engineering Apprenticeship after I complete the Traineeship as I am certain I want to pursue a career in this sector. I would encourage anyone who would like to pursue a career in engineering or may have an interest in hands on learning to do the course.

I wanted to leave school early because theory wasn't for me and I didn't want to go to University. A family friend who worked in Combilift told me about the traineeship. The Level 5 Engineering Technology traineeship combines classroom-based learning with hands on experience. I really enjoyed going out for work experience in Combilift, as it was two and three weeks each time and I learned a lot putting the theory into practice. I would encourage anyone who is interested in working with their hands to do the course. Combilift offered me a job and I am proud to say that I have a full time job doing something I really love

Daniel Soden
When Daniel Soden left school, he was keen to combine college classes with hands-on experience that could lead to concrete career opportunities in the engineering manufacturing sector.
The former pupil of The Royal School, Cavan started an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Traineeship with Combilift, Co Monaghan, the largest global manufacturer of forklifts. The traineeship is run by Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB) at Monaghan Institute.
The one-year, Level 5 programme is an example of the growing trend towards a work-based learning approach to qualifications. This one involves 11 weeks in Combilift, in blocks of two/three weeks, and 27 weeks in college. Combilift trainees are paid €100 a week for the nine months of the course.
Daniel, who hails from Scotstown, Co Monaghan, covered topics and skills including engineering and manufacturing processes, fabrication, welding, electrics, electronics and health and safety.
He says "it was good to learn the theory behind these processes and to watch practical demonstrations, but for me the real learning happened when I was actually carrying out the various tasks, when it all came together for me."

What did you study and where?
I studied a one-year engineering course at Monaghan Institute. The course is run in conjunction with Combilift with time split between the college and the factory.
Why did you choose a further education course?
I had applied for a course in engineering in Dundalk IT and got the points for that. I sort of chose this one because it is close to home. I’m from a farming background and I wanted to stay close to home. I like that it gave me the chance to get an education and it is practical as well. I knew this was for me.
What has been the highlight?
You get a knowledge of engineering and then there is the practical part working on the line and helping to build the machines. You get swapped around to different parts in the factory so you get different experiences. Two of the people teaching the course work in Combilift too they gave good advice and support. The practical side really suited me.

CMETB in conjunction with various local employers have collaborated to develop this Traineeship, which will provide a solid understanding of building technology design and Computer Aided Drawing (CAD). On this course individuals will work towards achieving QQI Level 6 Major Award in Architectural Technology and Design whilst gaining practical experience with host companies in Cavan and Monaghan.

This fully funded Traineeship provides a variety of modules which relate to the design/ drawing/CAD/IT skills required within the construction sector. If you are a creative person with strong attention to detail who enjoys working with technology and has an interest in building materials and construction this course could be for you. This course is suitable for learners who wish to further their career in this industry and will enable them to make an immediate contribution in the workplace.

The course will provide a solid understanding of Building Technology and Design using Computer Aided Draughting (CAD). There will be an opportunity for student affiliation to Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) and Autodesk Certified User Accreditation (ACU) in AutoCAD and Revit.
