Working as Cabin Crew for a major airline is an exciting and challenging career, where you can travel the world meanwhile working to provide excellent customer service and ensuring the safety of all passengers on board.

Is this course right for you?

This course aims to provide the specialist skills needed for working in the tourism, travel, airline and hospitality industries. It will develop the learner’s knowledge and understanding of the tourism industry, as well as preparing learners for further training and education in the sector.

What will you study?

This course contains Tourism related subjects which are taught using a variety of methods including lectures, visits, practicals and role plays. Work placement will give the learner valuable insight into the industry. There will also be opportunities to participate in field trips to specific tourist attractions. Learners will study Cabin Crew Operations and Ready to Fly, with is certified by the International Academy of Travel (IAOT). This exciting cabin crew module combines theoretical and practical components including practicing safety demonstrations and serving food and beverages. Students will also engage in training within a mock aircraft.

I completed the QQI Level 5 travel and Tourism course, with Cabin Crew Training in June 2022, I am now working as a receptionist in the 5 star Westbury Hotel, Dublin. I honestly don’t think I would be where I am today working for such a great company without this course as it gave me confidence and prepared me for the job. My long term goal is to use this course to an even greater advantage and apply for my dream job of cabin crew working for Emirates where I will be located in Dubai travelling around the world.

I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to work in hospitality or the travel and tourism industry as this course was very beneficial and was a great stepping stone.

I completed the QQI Level 5 Tourism and Travel with Cabin Crew course in Monaghan Institute in June 2021. After my Leaving Certificate, I had been offered a Level 8 Degree course however I wasn’t sure if I wanted to commit to a four-year degree. I decided to come to MI to study a one-year course in Tourism and Travel. During the year we studied a wide range of tourism specific modules and generic modules. I couldn’t recommend Monaghan Institute enough to students this September. There are smaller class sizes allowing closer contact with tutors. As a result of this course in MI I have decided to further study Tourism and I have started a Level 8 Degree course in Tourism and Digital Marketing in TU Dublin which I am really enjoying.

When I decided to return to education, I was immediately drawn towards studying Tourism and Travel at Monaghan Institute. I found the combination of theory and practical modules extremely interesting, the opportunity to study Cabin Crew Operations and the Ready to Fly module were really what got my attention. These modules were both very ‘hands on’ and encouraged team working. While on the Tourism and Travel course, I acquired many new skills which have served me tremendously well in moving forward with my academic studies. I would recommend this course to anybody looking to begin their career in the hospitality sector or within the airline industry. Thanks to all the tutors and staff of Monaghan Institute for the help and guidance given to me when I was studying there.

I would describe my time at Monaghan Institute as a really enjoyable experience. I gained a lot of practical experience from the Tourism and Travel course and made new friends. As I was unsure of what degree course I actually wanted to do, I thought that taking a one year course at Monaghan Institute would help me decide on my career path. And so it did, as I am now on a full time degree course at DkIT, studying Hospitality Management.

Doing the Travel and Tourism Level 5 course helped me to get into the degree programme in DkIT and it also gave me the confidence to embark on my third level learning journey. I am very thankful to all the tutors at Monaghan Institute for their support, advice and kindness during my year of study with them.

I would describe my time at Monaghan Institute as a really enjoyable experience. I gained a lot of knowledge from the Tourism and Travel course. I really enjoyed all elements of the course, as the different subjects provided a good mix of practical and theory based applications.

At the beginning of the year I was worried about how I would fit in, as I was returning to education after a long break, but my worries were unfounded as the staff and my fellow students were a wonderful source of support. During the year as part of the Tourism and Travel course I participated in many enjoyable class role plays, these were excellent confidence boosters. We completed training in Waterford airport as part of the Ready to Fly module and we also visited the Guinness Storehouse on our class field trip.

I would highly recommend this course to anybody thinking of studying Tourism and Travel. I am very thankful to the tutors and my fellow classmates at Monaghan Institute for all their support and advice during the year.

Good News Regarding Your Course Fees

In August 2022, Monaghan Institute and CMETB announced plans to significantly reduce fees on full time courses. This means that your course fees have been reduced to a maximum of €200. If you have a Medical Card/Social Welfare Payment, the fee will be €150. This fee includes all course materials, exam fees, toolkits, and uniforms.

The Ready to Fly exam fee of €250.00 is also fully funded by Monaghan Institute and CMETB.

After completing the QQI Level 5 Tourism and Travel course I can confidently recommend studying in Monaghan Institute. I had an incredible year and the close experience with my tutors helped navigate me on my journey within the tourism sector. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do after completing my Leaving Certificate, but I am absolutely delighted with my decision. Thanks to the work experience module, I was able to land a fantastic position in a travel agency and have made my mind up to continue work within the travel sector.

The tourism and hospitality industry is so broad that you are truly spoiled for choice at the end of your one-year course. I would advise anyone uncertain whether they are ready to commit to a 3 or 4 year course to consider studying a Level 5 course in Monaghan Institute, you will not walk away disappointed.

If I had not studied Tourism & Travel in Monaghan Institute I honestly wouldn't be studying Events Management in DIT now. Before I started this Level 5 course I did not think I would go to college but I am so glad I did as now I am studying on a degree course.

The biggest benefit I gained from Monaghan Institute is confidence. I can now stand in front of my class to give a presentation and it doesn’t bother me. The confidence I gained in the Tourism & Travel course will follow me through my degree programme.

Team working skills I learned in Monaghan Institute were invaluable to me as it is something I now use daily in my course in DIT. The Tourism course gave me time management skills from submitting assignments on time.

We had a great time on the Tourism and Travel course including the many trips we took as a class like to the Guinness Storehouse, Waterford Airport etc. I enjoyed the variety of modules studied. My best memory is the friends I made on the course and they are going to be friends for life.

I completed the Tourism and Travel Level 5 course and I am currently in DIT studying a Level 8 degree programme in Events Management.

I believe if I had not attended Monaghan Institute after my Leaving Cert I would definitely not be in a degree programme as I gained so much throughout my course in MI. I learned many skills including referencing, note taking and the importance of attendance. These skills have proved invaluable to me this year in DIT.

The time management skills I learned in Monaghan Institute have benefited me as I am now organising events and I have learned to structure my time carefully to ensure I meet deadlines.

My best memory of the Tourism course is going to Waterford Airport for our day of cabin crew training, it was the best day of the entire college year. We learned so many practical skills in the aircraft. It was a great opportunity to get to know my class mates. I really enjoyed the modules we studied and they have proved beneficial as I continue my studies.

I have gained so much from the Travel and Tourism course and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Demand for professional event managers has increased as organisations seek to engage with their customers and other key stakeholders in more innovative ways. The event manager oversees and arranges all aspects of the event and so needs excellent organisation skills along with creativity in their approach to problem solving.

This course is aimed at learners who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills in the tourism & event management industry. I completed the Tourism course in MI and I am currently studying a Level 7 degree in Tourism Management at the Technological University, Dublin. The course at MI provided a wide range of content that prepared me for my degree such as referencing and the theory we covered. I feel that I am at an advantage in comparison with students who go directly from Leaving Certificate to a degree programme. I definitely think everyone should do a PLC course before entering a degree programme. After all, without my qualification in MI, I would not have had the opportunity to study at TU Dublin.

Having successfully completed the QQI Travel and Tourism Level 5 course, I returned to study Travel & Event Management Level 6. This was an enjoyable and rewarding experience and has gained me a new depth of both knowledge and confidence, which I never believed possible prior to applying for the course.

Now having completed my studies at Monaghan Institute, I have found a new self-confidence to apply for vacancies within the various tourism fields including: Travel Agencies, Hotel/Reception, Tour Guides, Event Management/Co-ordination and many more, for which I would not have been confident or experienced enough to apply for beforehand. The Level 6 Advanced Certificate course has also provided the opportunity for entry into DklT to continue on to degree level.
