Level 5 PLC Access Course

The PLC Access course is aimed at learners coming directly from a Youthreach or Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) course. This bridging programme allows learners to experience college life in Monaghan Institute in a supported environment, while completing Level 4 and 5 modules. Learners can sample the course areas they are interested in progressing to in Monaghan Institute. Learners may be entitled to a training allowance and supports including access to a laptop to help them complete the Access course. The Access course is designed to find the most suitable course for you while developing your academic skills.

Having an opportunity to sample any course in Monaghan Institute provides a clear understanding of what’s involved in future areas of study, whilst building your academic, social and personal skills and becoming familiar with the college campus and college life.

The combination and variety of modules studied on the Access course helps the learner prepare for progression to their programme of choice.

The PLC Access Course provides learners with a range of skills and the opportunity to experience college life, to gain certification and to build confidence to see them successfully progress on to their desired Level 5 programme.

Learners on the course will study Word Processing, Customer Service and Communications at QQI Level 5 and Teamworking at QQI Level 4. Learners will also complete life skills classes such as culinary skills in the kitchen and will have access to a counsellor, who will provide information and support them in their transition to college.

In Term one learners link up with Tanagh Outdoor Education Centre to try out and complete awards in; Kayaking, Canoeing, Orienteering, Hill Walking and Leave No Trace. This gives learners a taste of work in the field of outdoor pursuits.

Learners will also sample courses in Monaghan Institute. They will get the opportunity to choose courses and subjects that interest them and sample these modules throughout the academic year. Learners will also get the chance to study and achieve certification in First Aid and Manual Handling.

- Level 5 PLC Access Course

I completed the PLC Access programme in 2019/2020. I was not sure what to expect when going into this course as it was my first time attending Monaghan Institute. I think it is only fair to say that this course gave me the jump start to college life that I needed. While doing the Access course I learned many different skills such as essay writing, doing assignments and referencing through Harvard style. Throughout the year I spoke with the coordinator when deciding on what Level 5 course I wanted to study in MI the following year. At the time I wasn’t fully confident on where I was going, that’s when I was introduced to Liberal Arts. It was explained to me that by studying Liberal Arts I would have a broader range of degree courses that I could apply to progress on to. Having already planned to do community and youth work I decided to do the Liberal Arts in case I changed my mind. I completed the PLC Access programme followed by the Level 5 Liberal Arts programme in MI and I am now going on to study a BA in Community and Youth Work in Maynooth University. I think it’s safe to say that if I hadn’t decided to do the Access programme, I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today. I would highly recommend the Access programme to students who aren’t ready to jump straight into the college life and also for students who aren’t sure of what career in life they wish to pursue.
