If you wish to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy, completing this course will be the steppingstone which will enable you to consolidate your decision to either progress to a degree programme or seek employment. We focus on developing your understanding of the role of the Occupational Therapy Assistant. We aim to facilitate you to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to assist the Occupational Therapist in the implementation of therapeutic programmes with a variety of age groups.

What will you study?

You will study a range of Modules, both Health Care and Occupational Therapy related in a state-of-the-art facility in Monaghan Institute. An integral part of the course is to provide you with an opportunity to engage in Work Experience in the field of Occupational Therapy. You will have a one/two-day Work Experience allocation each week, with an additional block placement of three weeks. This will allow you to see the theory learned in the classroom put into practice in the Occupational Therapy setting. Furthermore, it will develop your vocational language and you will observe the work of the multidisciplinary team. On completion of the course, you will not only have acquired the skills and knowledge but also the Work Experience, all necessary to assist you in progression to further study or to employment.

Choosing the Occupational Therapy Assistant course was the best decision I could have made in returning to education. The course provided me with a comprehensive understanding of Occupational Therapy along with the role of several members of the multidisciplinary team.

The qualification of health care assistant, alongside OTA and skills I have developed through these modules have opened up employment and educational opportunities. Monaghan Institute have been instrumental in securing a place at university by providing guidance and knowledge of further education routes.

As former leaving certificate and mature students we have found this course beneficial. It gave us an insight into the Healthcare profession. In college the practical facilities are excellent, preparing us for placement, University, and employment. For work experience we chose a variety of placements, for example, Special Needs School, Special Needs classes in mainstream Education and Learning Disability units. We had an opportunity in the new year to gain work experience with HSE Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants. We would encourage anyone interested in following a career as an Occupational Therapy Assistant not to hesitate and apply.

We received immense support with additional lunchtime classes, if needed. We have applied to a number of Universities and would recommend MI as a steppingstone to a career as an Occupational Therapist or to employment as an Occupational Therapy Assistant.

The Occupational Therapy Assistant works under the direction of the Occupational Therapist and are part of the multidisciplinary team. Their role is very diverse, from working in paediatrics, schools, rehabilitation centres to Nursing Homes to mention but a few. They are committed to providing a quality service for service users.
Their duties can range from assisting service users with training and rehabilitation in e.g., Personal activities of daily living (PADL’s), Domestic activities of daily living (DADL’s), Work/vocational skills and Community living skills.
Professional Knowledge, organizational and planning skills as well as good people skills are necessary requirements for this role.

The overall aim of the programme is to provide the learner with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to work independently and under supervision in a supportive role within the Health Service.

Is this course right for you?

If you wish to pursue a profession as a health service worker, then this is the course for you. We focus on providing the necessary skills and knowledge required across a range of care settings with a variety of age groups. The course also welcomes those who are already employed in a caring role, and require the necessary qualifications.

What will you study?

You will study several modules directly related to the field of health care. The appropriate interpersonal and interactive skills to work as a member of the interdisciplinary team will also be explored. An integral part of this course is work experience, one day per week, with a further three weeks allocated as a block placement to enable learners to gain experience in their chosen field and to enhance job prospects.

CS03 - Level 5 Health Service Skills

Daire Markey

After successfully completing the PLC Access course in Monaghan Institute I decided to progress on to the Health Service Skills course. The course consists of a range of both practical and theoretical subjects and is taught by experienced tutors who offer great support and encouragement throughout the year.

I completed mandatory training including First Aid and Patient Moving and Handling. I availed of the laptop loan scheme and received additional academic support which helped me get my assignments done to a high standard. Having completed a block of work experience in a nursing home gave me practical skills and experience.

I am now employed as a health care assistant in my local community. I would highly recommend this course.

The Health Service Skills course has given me a great opportunity to gain a career in the Healthcare sector. As a mature student I was pleased to find that there were other mature learners in my class. We studied a range of modules and had excellent practical facilities to prepare us for work experience and future employment. I have successfully gained full-time work from my work experience. 

The course is varied and interesting, and the tutors are extremely helpful. The college itself has a range of supports available to all students, inducing the laptop loan scheme, books, help with assignments and support classes at lunchtime for those who wish to avail of them. In addition, staff were always on hand to help with any queries from students, in my opinion Monaghan Institute absolutely is a five-star college.

I returned to Ireland after spending 22 years in New York. I had always wanted a change of Career and when I spoke to staff at Monaghan Institute, they advised me of the range of courses available and that the opportunity to progress, should I wish to pursue that option. Last year I did a Level 5 Health Service Skills course, which was a highly motivating course. On successful completion I gained employment as a Health Care Assistant. The modules covered in this course provided me with experience, knowledge, and Skills, all extremely beneficial to me now as a practicing Health Care Assistant.

The tutors were more than helpful, with excellent facilities and services within the college. I am now furthering my education, doing Applied Social Studies, Level 6. My plan is to do Level 7 Health & Social Studies here in Monaghan Institute next year. This degree program is delivered by ATU Donegal and facilitated at Monaghan Institute.

I have absolutely no regrets returning to education as a mature student. I have not only gained knowledge and skills but also confidence in myself. The staff and facilities at Monaghan institute are amazing.

On completion of the Leaving Certificate in 2009 I applied to Monaghan Institute where I studied Early Childhood Care and Education at Level 5 and the following year, I progressed to Level 6. In September 2020 I returned to Monaghan Institute to study Level 5 Health Service Skills course as a mature student. This course provided a range of modules such as Care of the Older Person, Care Support, Infection Prevention and Control and Work Experience to mention but a few. During the pandemic I was very lucky to secure Work Experience in my local nursing home, where I gained significant knowledge and practical experience. The tutors gave everyone in the course excellent help and support throughout this time. I achieved a certificate in Health Service Skills in June 2021. In view of my achievement, I decided to further my education in this field and have now commenced Level 6 Applied Social Studies at Monaghan Institute.

Before entering Monaghan Institute I completed the LCA. Following this I decided to do a PLC course in the Institute, in Health Service Skills. As well as studying a range of modules, we had an opportunity to gain Work Experience in an area of our own choice. I completed mine in an Alzheimer's day unit and a Nursing Home. In both places I gained considerable experience. These opportunities consolidated my decision to pursue a career in Social Care. I completed Level 5 Health Service Skills course and I have now progressed to Athlone Institute of Technology, to study Level 7 in Social Care. I would highly recommend Monaghan Institute, the tutors were very helpful and supportive and they were always there to help us and guide us in the right direction.

I had previously worked as a care worker in Monaghan Hospital and had taken time off to look after my young family. My plan was that someday in the future I would return to this type of work. However, as the years passed and the qualification requirements advanced I found it very daunting. I was particularly concerned about the level of Literacy and IT skills that were required.
I attended an Open Evening in Monaghan Institute and was encouraged to enrol for the Level 5 Health Service Skills course, which I knew I needed in order to return to employment and pursue the career that I had in the past.

We studied nine modules, all pertinent to the area that I was interested in. One of those modules was Work Experience, this enables you to gain practical experience in an area of your choice. I chose a Nursing home; however, you are free to select any place that you feel will meet your needs. You are allocated one day per week and a three-week block placement to enable you to gain experience. This really boosted my confidence and increased my knowledge and skills. I was delighted to receive an offer of employment, as an Activities Coordinator, in this facility on completion of the course.
As a mature student I would highly recommend Monaghan Institute to anyone seeking employment or wanting to advance their education. The facilities are excellent and the college offers a wide variety of courses. The tutors were extremely helpful and assisted and supported me throughout the year which was of great benefit to me.

Having been made redundant in May 2015, from a job that I’d held for almost twenty years, the decision to return to education was not an easy one for me. After some consideration I decided to pursue the Health Service Skills course at Monaghan Institute and from very early on I knew that I had made the right choice.

I found the course tutors to be extremely approachable and supportive. The facilities were excellent, providing the opportunity to gain some practical skills before entering the work place. The modules themselves were very interesting, in particular the Work Experience module, which offered students the opportunity get out into the workplace and gain hands on experience in their chosen area of care.

Before completing the course, I attended an interview at a local nursing home and was successful in securing a job there. I took up the position of Health Care Assistant on completion of my final exams. I would highly recommend Monaghan Institute to anyone, seeking to gain employment or pursue further educational opportunities.

I joined Monaghan Institute as a mature student to study Health Service Skills. The decision to go back into full time education wasn’t easy as I had been out of work for so long, being a full time single mother, but this was a course I had an interest in and was keen to pursue. I enjoyed the Health Care Support course, although at times, it was daunting.

The programme consists of both theory and development of practical skills. One of the modules I studied was Work Experience. I choose an elderly care unit as my placement. Not only did it o er me hands on experience, but it also consolidated my career choice.

Within a month of completion of the Health Service Skills course I attended two job interviews for positions in Nursing homes and was offered both. Currently I am working as a part time carer for the elderly in a local Nursing home and still have time to spend with my family.

My tutors gave me amazing support throughout the academic year and there was an abundance of assistance from all the staff if needed. I would recommend Monaghan Institute to young and old, as it has a positive atmosphere all year round and guides all towards success and fulfilling their ambition.

This course will enable learners to work as a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant or to use the programme as a foundation for further study in health care, speech and language and social care.

I had the best experience in Monaghan Institute. The course modules are directly aligned with the requirements of the SLTA role, and they have equipped me with a really strong foundation of theoretical and practical knowledge. The M.I staff are incredible; I felt encouraged and supported every step of way.
