CM01 - Level 5 Computer Systems and Networks

This course will equip learners with the skills required to network and manage the proliferation of “smart” devices that will increasingly transform modern society. Employment opportunities will be enhanced as well as the opportunity to progress to further studies at Levels 6, 7 or 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications.

Is this course right for you?

The combination of modules studied enables the learner to develop a broad spectrum of skills, from maintenance of networks to software systems, preparing them for employment in the rapidly expanding sector. They gain an understanding of an organisation’s technology needs in order to develop a tailored communication network platform.

What will you study?

On the Computer Networking course learners will become familiar with the design, installation and maintenance of “smart” devices and networks. Learners can also attain industry certified qualification via COMPTIA A+ certification, in addition to their QQI Award.

I studied Level 6 Advanced Computer Network Technology & Software Systems. I enjoyed my time studying in MI. At the start I wasn't fully sure what to expect from the course, but as the weeks went by I started to understand how what I was going to learn throughout the year was relevant to companies and organisations of all sizes manage and control their IT operations and infrastructures. The week after my exams finished, Topaz offered me a full time position within their IT department and now i currently work as an IT & Infrastructure & Operations and Service Desk Engineer.

Returning to college was a very big decision for me and my family. My main aim was to gain knowledge and skills in computing that would lead to full time employment in the locality. Over two years of study in Monaghan Institute, I learned many new things through project work, assignments and skills demonstration and I found the work-placement module very helpful in gaining
an insight into how both large and small companies use IT in co-ordinating and running their affairs.

All the teachers where very helpful and considerate to me whilst at college. My time at MI was very worthwhile and enjoyable and I would recommend anyone to do the Computer Network course as it has led me directly into employment, which was my original goal when starting the course.

As a mature student returning to college I found my course of studies in Computing at Monaghan Institute was an excellent foundation that provided me with the necessary IT skills to obtain an exciting career in the IT industry. The Work Experience component of the course gave me an insight into working in an IT environment and really helped me in deciding what path to pursue. I am now employed as an Enterprise Service Desk Specialist with Kingspan Group PLC, Cavan.

Good News Regarding Your Course Fees

In August 2022, Monaghan Institute and CMETB announced plans to significantly reduce fees on full time courses. This means that your course fees have been reduced to a maximum of €200. If you have a Medical Card/Social Welfare Payment, the fee will be €150. This fee includes all course materials, exam fees, toolkits, and uniforms.

After I completed my Leaving Cert I was unsure of which course or career option I wanted to progress to. I had heard of Monaghan Institute and attended some of the Open Days, so I thought to apply as an option after my Leaving Cert. I got accepted to the Level 5 Games Design course and realised within a few weeks that the course and Monaghan Institute really suited me. I enjoyed the subjects on the course, even though some of them were new and challenging, the tutors were always really helpful and encouraging.

On the Level 5 course I had the opportunity to create Games and Software solutions and put these on display within the college. The experience made me aware that I wanted to continue studying at Monaghan Institute and achieve my Level 6 qualifications, which will enable me to go to higher education or directly to employment, as the course coordinator is always building links with industries and past graduates who are seeking to employ students from the Software Development courses due to its excellent reputation and the level of content we learn on the course. I definitely feel that studying at Monaghan Institute was the best choice for me.

I came to Monaghan Institute to study Computer Games Design and Programming as I felt it my best chance in planning for my future in the field of Games Design. I ended up getting far more than I bargained for, on top of meeting great people in a relaxed yet focused environment, the sheer variety of modules on this course opened my eyes to routes in this field that I didn’t know existed.
