I studied the Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Computer Network Technology & Software Systems. Before coming to Monaghan Institute, I was working full time as a Supervisor in Topaz Centra Monaghan.

I enjoyed my time studying at MI. Admittedly at the start I wasn’t fully sure what to expect from the course, but as the weeks went by I started to understand how what I was learning was relevant to how companies and organisations of all sizes manage and control their IT operations and infrastructure. It got me thinking about how the IT department in Topaz worked, so I asked about the possibilities of work placement with the IT department and they were delighted to have me. My work placement was a brilliant way to put the skills I learnt in class each week into practice in a live working environment.

The week after my exams finished, Topaz offered me a full time position within their IT department and I now currently work as an IT Infrastructure & Operations Service Desk Engineer. The skills I learnt while studying this course play a vital role in my day to day tasks, and for that I would like to thank MI Staff for helping me achieve my results.

Having been made redundant in 2008, I ended up staying at home for seven years to care for my young family. When my youngest child started school, I decided it was time to get myself back out into the workforce, but I was very undecided as to what I wanted to do.

In March 2015, I attended an Open Day at Monaghan Institute. I felt very intimidated walking through those doors for the first time and if truth be told I just wanted to walk straight back out again, but one of the tutors immediately caught sight of me and came straight over to chat with me and offered me advice on the different courses being run there. After a ten minute conversation with her I knew I had just taken the first step towards the rest of my life.

I started the QQI Business Administration course that September. At times I found it quite difficult to balance college, work and family life but with so much support from my tutors and classmates I made it through the year and finished with full Distinctions. It was one of the hardest, yet most rewarding years of my life.

I completed the Tourism and Travel Level 5 course and I am currently in DIT studying a Level 8 degree programme in Events Management. I believe if I had not attended Monaghan Institute after my Leaving Cert, I would definitely not be in a degree programme, as I gained so much throughout the course.

I learned many skills including referencing, note taking and the importance of attendance. These skills have proved invaluable to me this year in DIT. The time management skills I learned in Monaghan Institute have also benefited me, as I am now organising events and I have learned to structure my time carefully to ensure I meet deadlines. I really enjoyed all the modules and they have proven beneficial as I continue my studies.

My fondest memory of the Tourism course is going to Waterford Airport for our day of Cabin Crew Training, it was the best day of the entire college year. We learned so many practical skills in the aircraft. It was a great opportunity to get to know my classmates. I have gained so much from the Travel and Tourism course and would highly recommend it to anyone.
