If you wish to pursue a profession as a Health Service worker then this is the course for you. We focus on providing the necessary skills and knowledge across a range of care settings with a variety of age groups. The course also welcomes those who are already employed in a caring role.

Leaving Certificate with five O6 grades (or five passes pre 2017) or Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent. For mature students applications may be considered based on a proven interest in the caring profession. Entry may be subject to interview and depends on satisfactory completion of an induction programme and Garda Vetting.

Course Structure

You will study a number of modules directly related to the field of health care. The appropriate interpersonal and interactive skills to work as a member of the multidisciplinary team will also be explored. An integral part of the course is work experience, with a minimum of 3 week’s duration  required in one setting.

Career Options | Progression

Holders of a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Health Service Skills can directly enter employment in the caring profession as a nurse’s aide, care assistant or special care assistant. This course can also enhance your qualifications and career prospects if you are an existing care worker or lead to further study at an Institute of Technology. This qualification is recognised by the Health Service Executive.

CS03 - Level 5 Community and Social Care

This course focuses on the delivery of knowledge and foundation skills necessary to work in the field of social care. To enhance the learner’s experience and open up the prospect of employment or further study, a module that relates specifically to working with young people has been included as an option.

Career Options | Progression

Holders of a Level 5 Certificate in Applied Social Studies may find employment in the community in a range of social care settings. There are also excellent opportunities to pursue further qualifications by taking a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Applied Social Studies or by gaining access to higher education courses. For example, successful learners may progress through the Higher Education Links Scheme to a BA in Social Care at DIT or DklT.

CS05 - Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Applied Social Studies

This course is designed to provide an understanding of the many roles of Social Care, to develop the learner’s knowledge and appreciation of the duties involved and skills required to work successfully in a social care setting. Some learners with potential for academic progression may select this as a route to Social Care degree courses in Universities and Institutes of Technology.

This is an Advanced Certificate course for those who have already successfully obtained a QQI Level 5 Certificate or equivalent in Applied Social Studies or a relevant field of study. Career Options | Progression

Successful completion of the Applied Social Studies Level 6 programme enables learners to gain entry to Universities and Institutes of Technology, through the Higher Education Links Scheme. Examples include BSc Degree courses in Social Care (Level 7&8).

Holders of a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Social and Vocational Integration (Code 6M2218) are also eligible to gain advanced entry to the second year of the Athlone Institute of Technology Bachelor of Arts in Applied Social Studies in Social Care (Code AL765), subject to places being available. These places may be subject to an order of merit basis if demand is high.

CS06 - Level 5 Youthwork

This course is aimed at individuals who wish to pursue a career in youth and community work. The course provides learners with knowledge and understanding of the context of youth work, the role of a youth worker and the practical skills required to work effectively with young people in the field of youth work. Learners must have an interest in community based youth work and will be required to work with a youth group during the course.
