Is this course right for you?

This course will equip learners with a basic understanding of the fundamentals of mechanical engineering, which is essential for anyone wishing to pursue a career in engineering. This course also provides students with an opportunity to study QQI Level 5 Mathematics which is required for entry into Engineering courses at third level.

What will you study?

The course offers practical skills in Engineering principles and processes to include machining, precision measurement, laser cutting, 3D printing, CNC machining and bench fitting, along with the theoretical knowledge of machining processes with an emphasis on safe work practices. These skills would form the basis of any course in Engineering which learners might later pursue at a third level institution or on an apprenticeship. A minimum of 10 days’ work placement must be completed. Practical workshop sessions form an integral part of the course.

This course provides students with a basic introduction to motorsports with Rallying the major discipline focused on.

This course is aimed at anyone who has an interest in maintenance on motor cars or cars involved in motor sports and who wish to join the automotive industry. It will also be of interest to students who want to expand their knowledge of motor sport car maintenance.

The programme will also facilitate learners to complete their Rally Driver Licence (applicants must be 17yrs of age and hold a full Road Traffic Act driving licence).

What will you study?

The course aims to equip students with a good basic knowledge of the practical and theory aspects of motor vehicles in different types of motor sports e.g. rallying. You will be focusing on core modules to develop skills in motor mechanics, including routine maintenance, fault diagnosis and safe working practices. QQI 5M2061 - Level 5 Combilift Engineering Traineeship

Combilift Ltd. produces a range of load handling solutions for a global market from a base in Monaghan town. CMETB in conjunction with Combilift Ltd. have collaborated to develop a traineeship to prepare learners for work with Combilift Ltd. as future engineers. Combilift plan to double their production over the next five years and have identified a need for skilled employees to deliver this objective.
In cooperation with Monaghan Institute CMETB Combilift have developed an Engineering traineeship. The aim is to combine theory and practical industry experience to provide a solid understand of Engineering before the trainee enters the workplace in Combilift Ltd.

Trainees will complete 11 weeks in industry working with Combilift Ltd. and 27 weeks studying in Monaghan Institute. The work based learning takes place in Combilift Ltd. and is spread across the year in blocks of two/three weeks.

Entry Requirements & Application

Applicants must be over 17 years of age and have completed their Leaving certificate with five O6 grades or five passes pre 2017 (preferably to include Mathematics, Engineering or another technical subject).  For mature students these requirements need not apply and applications may be considered based on a proven interest in Engineering. Entry is subject to aptitude test and an interview.

Fees Nil

There are no fees for this course. You will be entitled to Travel or Accommodation allowance, a Meal Allowance and access to the CETS Childcare scheme.  If you are on a Department of Social Welfare payment you may be able to continue to receive your payments, you should check with your DSP officer.  For those not in receipt of a DSP payment a bursary may be payable. This is at the discretion of the employer and is subject to satisfactory conduct and attendance.
