AH01 - Level 5 Art, Craft & Design – Portfolio Preparation

This varied and stimulating course equips learners with a broad range of skills necessary to embark on careers in Art and Design, which is a huge industry, encompassing all of the products and graphics we have in our households, on TV, and in the media. Artwork completed throughout the year will be selected and presented in a portfolio that is submitted to relevant Art colleges in Ireland and the UK.

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate with five O6 grades (or five passes pre 2017) or Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent. For mature students applications may be considered based on a proven interest in Art, Craft & Design. Entry may be subject to interview/portfolio.

Course Structure

The course consists of art and design studio work, work experience including research into the industry, and communication skills. In depth analysis of the NCAD portfolio brief is provided, as well as advice on a broad range of third level courses, from animation to interior design, to fine art and so on. Field trips consist of visits to art and design exhibitions and college open days. A selection of work will be showcased in a professional gallery space at the end of the year.

Career Options

Successful completion of the QQI Level 5 Certificate in Art, Craft & Design and production of a portfolio to a high standard allows progression to a QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Arts Administration or to further studies at Institutes of Technology/Universities and NCAD. Employment opportunities include the various areas of design, media and print. Alternatively, a career as an Artist, Arts Administrator or in the area of Art & Design Education can be followed.

AH02 - Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Arts Administration

This Advanced Certificate course provides the opportunity for those with a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Art, Craft and Design or equivalent to continue their studies at a higher level. There will be a strong emphasis on developing artistic skills and creativity and this course will enable you to apply these skills professionally.

Applicants for this Advanced Certificate course must have already successfully obtained a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Art, Craft and Design or equivalent. Entry may be subject to interview & portfolio.

Course Structure

The course involves commitment to theory, research and project work and will include opportunities to visit exhibitions, galleries, artists’ studios and design companies in Ireland and possibly abroad. The marketing and entrepreneurship element of the course ensures a hands on approach to developing successful arts events and exhibitions locally.

AH02 - Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Arts Administration

Career Options

On successful completion of this Advanced Certificate course, there are employment opportunities in community arts projects, working in art galleries or arts centres and through developing art or craft enterprises locally. The Arts Administration Level 6 award can also  lead to Art and Design degree courses at third level, which in turn can open up a broad range of careers, including Fine Art, Education, Design, for example Fashion and Textiles, Visual Communication (Graphics, Branding, Advertising), Product Design, Crafts and so on.

AH03 - Level 5 Performing Arts

This course is designed for learners who wish to be actors/performers or who want to facilitate performance, including devising their own plays. The course is delivered both on and off-stage, by example and analysis, through practice and appreciation and is complemented with guest lectures, workshops and public performances.

5M5151 QQI Level 5 Performing Arts

Course Structure

The course includes a combination of theatre practices and their appreciation, complemented by training in the areas of performance skills, drama and technical skills. In the TV and Film Acting module you will learn the art of self-taping, understand the difference between stage and screen acting, film: ads, monologues, dialogues and film scenes, culminating in a show reel.

Throughout the course learners will get multiple opportunities to perform on stage and in front of an audience and you will also have many opportunities to create and devise your own theatre scenes/plays. There will also be an end the year professional production in the Garage Theatre, Monaghan.

AH04 - Level 5 Pre-University Arts (Liberal Arts)

The Liberal Arts course enables learners to acquire a broad base of knowledge in a variety of subjects and is of particular value to those aiming to continue their studies at third level, especially those preparing to undertake an Arts degree. This course is also beneficial to mature learners hoping to re-enter formal education.

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate (or equivalent qualification) with minimum five O6 grades (or five passes pre 2017), to include English. LCA with distinction may qualify with appropriate references. If you are a mature student these requirements need not apply and applications will be considered based on a proven interest in the humanities, history or communications. Entry may be subject to interview.
